Kinsey receives a job task that takes her to Draegon, a whisky brewery. When she gets there, she finds out that not only does it look like she was set up, but Ryder, her ex-lover who left without a word and, OH, turns out to be a mythical dragon, happens to work there. Now she will have to work with him to find out who set her up.
This is the first part in next book of this author’s Dark Kings series. Unlike the previous ones, Kinsey has already had her heart shattered by Ryder and found out the wrong way what he really was. So far, I am liking the story and the build up of the characters. Kinsey is smart and definitely spunky. Then again, this author writes all of her heroines smart and successful.I can’t wait to read the next one. I highly recommend.

Ryder finds himself faced with memories of an explosive affair when the woman of his dreams is dragged into his world in this enthralling first installment of the newest Dark Kings novel.
Part one grabs readers from the very first page and already promises to be one heck of a ride with several different anticipation building elements that has me on pins and needles waiting for the next book. The chemistry between Ryder and Kinsey is already rockin’ the boat and causing trouble and of course someone is up to something but it is the Dark or is it Ulrik? This part of the story also packs quite an emotional wallop as the past comes back to haunt our hero and heroine.
I was enthralled with this spectacular beginning and I just know that Ryder and Kinsey’s story is going to be one sensational read.

This book is the first installment in the Smoke and Fire serial, that is part of the ongoing Dark Kings series. As a newbie to Ms. Grant's books, I felt a bit lost at first but the great narrative style and the characters caught my attention. I definitely want to go back and read all previous books !
What I really enjoyed is the possibility of a second chance for the heroes of this story Ryder, the immortal Dragon King and Kinsey, a young human woman. It was obvious that despite their differences, they are soul mates and have great chemistry. They met three years before the start of this story and fell in love. But Ryder left Kinsey without a word of explanation. Neither one of them was able to move on. Since he left her, Ryder has watched Kinsey from afar, making sure she was safe. But with the recent attacks of the Dark Fae, their world might be in danger.
I’m looking forward to reading the second part of this serial to discover more about this suspenseful and addictive story.

After reading Chris Cannon's Dragon shifter series , I felt in the mood as I awaited the new book in the series - some more Dragon shifter tales and came across the Serial "Smoke and Fire". Part #1 introduces us to Kinsley and Ryder who three years ago were in a relationship and they loved each other - that was until Kinsley became a target of The Dark Ones and in order to save her Ryder had to change and become his Dragon side - the real him. This instance caused Kinsey to run from the one she loved and now three years later they have ended up back together in the same place , though this time it is more dangerous as a War has been brewing and it is becoming harder for the Dragons to stay under the radar from humans and they wanted Kinsey there for a reason. With Kinsey back in the picture, can he continue to help his friends in the Dragon Society or will looking out and making sure Kinsey is safe and sound interfere with his priorities and weaken the Dragons teamwork especially since it is the Humans they are warring against not to mention the second strongest ex-communicated Dragon Kings of History. I have to admit for a serial, I did expect this book to have a faster pace - but I struggled to get through it and am glad in a way that it is a serial as not sure I could have read the whole story if it was in one chunk rather than four little parts. In saying that though, it has got me peaked and I now will have to read the other three parts of the story.

I am not sure why SMOKE AND FIRE is being released in four parts; this first part is 100% information dump. All it did was briefly introduce the main characters and catch up readers on the last 8 books worth of mythology and action - and not very well, either.
Between having previous couples literally run through the scenes on their way somewhere just to name-drop, and trying to sum up thousands of years of strife, betrayal and war in under 80 pages, all this first part did was leave me asking myself what the heck had happened.
Kinsey and Riley are both "computer geeks" but in name only; neither of them showed any geekiness or even any obvious technical skills other than furiously typing and undescriptive "hacking". They could have had any other job or characteristic without really impacting the story. Neither had much of a personality. This story also relies heavily on the characters having misunderstandings about why they left each other and serious trust issues, but instead being interesting, it just made me want to shake them and make them talk to each other instead of staring into each other's eyes and having disagreements.
I can think of excellent serial paranormal romance novels and serial stories, where each part has a beginning, middle and end, while still contributing to the overall story. This just feels like the tedious front part of a novel that has been ripped off the of the paperback. I have no interest in reading the rest of the novel, as the main characters didn't interest me, and I can't remember the (overly complicated) names of the dozen other characters introduced.
