Fourth and a long shot is a true story about a young man with learning disabilities that had a dream to become a professional athlete at any cost. Of his disabilities the one focused on in this book is one that several students are challenged with but most aren’t properly diagnosed which is called dyslexia. They call dyslexia the hidden disability because most people with it just think they aren’t as smart as the other kids. When in all actuality because of the struggle with written expression and comprehension most are out of the box thinkers. Some of our most famous people throughout history were dyslexic, which are all mentioned in this book.
This story focuses on a kid from Pumphrey, Maryland right on the city county line in Baltimore named Jarryn Avery. Jarryn was a rambunctious kid and was always getting into things. He ended up doing something that ended up being his worst nightmare eating lead paint flakes out of his Grandmothers window sill that lead to his learning disabilities. Because of this he struggled all through elementary school and took a lot of ridicule from his family because he was the only one in his immediate family that struggled in the classroom. Jarryn had two brothers and a sister and he was the baby. All his other siblings were honor students so you can imagine how he was teased and looked at as a let down by his parents. His mother broke his heart as a child by her harsh words about his grades. Then around third grade they finally discovered he had a learning disability after being diagnosed. He changed schools and had support from his family but the struggles didn’t stop.
That’s when he had this epiphany that he was bigger than everyone else so if he couldn’t read and write that he would get a job using what he did have, which was size so he didn’t have to be a book worm. Being a professional football player was his focus ever since. He couldn’t play youth league though because he was overweight and going into 8th grade his was already 6’2” and almost two hundred pounds. He met a kid around that time that would be a big part of the most corrupt thing he ever did in his life even though it wasn’t looked at that way at the time. He met John Smith who was a good friend to him.
Jarryn finally gets his shot to play football in high school and ended up being a high school phenomenon. All of the top schools in the country wanted to recruit Jarryn. The only problem is that special education came back to haunt him. He didn’t have the core classes needed to attend those schools so he graduated high school and went to junior college which he calls in this book his biggest mistake. After frustrations with the military junior college he attended he dropped out and had this bright idea of how to make it towards his goal to make it to the NFL. Since his old friend John Smith had a good transcript he would get with who we call in this book (the underworld) and get identification so he could pursue a college career as John Smith. It actually worked. He went to Maine Central prep school first and shined so much that he was recruited and given a full scholarship to Kansas State as John Smith.
There were a lot of nervous moments and pressures involved in this venture and finally at Kansas he ended up confiding in his tutor, telling her everything. So intrigued by his story she never told but she taught him how excel in academics with studying techniques and enhanced his comprehension skills. Shortly after that Jarryn decided that he could now leave Kansas and start back over doing it on his own, with his name. He gained confidence that he could compete with the best because he dominated on every level. During what we call in the book (the resurrection) he started from scratch, going to junior college and then on to Rowan University, a division three school.
With pride Jarryn held a 3.0 GPA at Rowan and drew attention from NFL scouts. Download this "True Story" of perseverance
