This is the second Sloane Monroe book I've read and enjoyed them both. However, I keep going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars because somehow a murder mystery with a deeply disturbed serial killer on the lose manages to be light reading. Although I like the feisty protagonist and enjoy her exploits, I didn't feel really engaged in the story, which seems contradictory but nevertheless. Sloane is the only character with any dimension. The men are flat extremes of anger, dispassion, dismissiveness, misogyny, chauvinism and devotion. Really, Sloane is a terrific character but it would be good to flesh out some of the other characters, too. And make them more realistic; even men have some depth of character and dimension. Everyone loves a superhero but making Sloane a little more vulnerable may help the reader to become more invested in the story. Regardless, the book provides good writing, mostly decent dialogue and a good story.Product details

Murder in Mind Sloane Monroe Book 2 edition by Cheryl Bradshaw Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a quick, easy, read, and maybe that was the problem it was simplistic, shallow, and not really engaging. There were places that had me shaking my head the hypo and the tree, Sloane "profiling" Sinnerman (and her profile was so shallow as to be worthless) yet being "astonished" when she saw the picture of his mother? Geez, I saw that coming, and so would anyone else who'd ever watched an episode of Criminal Minds or a similar show.
This may be a small thing but there were also a couple times where the author used the word procure, and it was such an odd word to use, especially given the rest of the writing, that it took me out of the limited flow I had going. Once the author used the word "pullulated" however, I was yanked out harshly (I have a fairly good vocabulary, but had to look this word up--there were plenty of other words she might have used). I wondered if she'd discovered a new word and wanted to use it, so she stuck it here.
Add to that the misuse of apostrophes (fed's), and random misplaced commas (neither of which on their own or even together would have ruined the book for me since they weren't that frequent), and this just wasn't a wonderful read.
Ok, I read this book in less than a day (in a matter of hours actually) {I had to sleep between the first and second book}, yeah, it is that good! As I said in my first review, I'm a character reader, I get into the characters, their story, who/what they are. The author does an amazing job of painting the primary character quickly & thoroughly, Developing secondary characters in the same manner. This book is in all senses of the word, a thriller and the author continues to develop Sloan in such a way that there's nothing unbelieveable in what she does, her character defines her actions. No spoilers from me though I can see more about these characters in the future.
This is the start of a decent story but in no way ready to be a completed work. The police on the case are depicted as being incompetent at best including an FBI agent. It felt like the characters were all molded to advance the story and shine a light on how Sloane was the only one capable of catching the killer. There is no true development of the story or the characters. It was all too easy. I don't know if Ms Bradshaw has an editor or not but if I were her editor I would have handed this back and told her to flesh out your characters and develop the storyline. You have talent but put in the work. Don't think I didn't like the story; I did , but I was disappointed that it read like a first draft.
I just hate having my escape blocked when I go to a book to escape.
What blocks me from getting totally immersed in a story?
Poor or award word choice. Many times Cheryl used words that just did not fit.
I'll include a few examples
FBI's or FBIs . That apostrophe is important. It marks a possessive (the dog's bark was very loud. vs The dogs barking was very loud).
Cheryl wrote (loc.2328) "The place is already swarming with fed's."
Spell check does not choose the correct homophone site or sight
as vs like The best test for this is to try substituting "the way" for "as"in the sentence. E.g. Like is a preposition whereas AS is a conjunction joining two clauses.
The most problematic is using a word that has the wrong meaning.
averted vs avoided (loc. 1058) "He averted the question."
so vs neither (loc. 1615)" I didn't say a word. So did they."
(loc. 1644) He sat down beside me and remitted a cup of tea.
(loc 1722) " ...but she didn't get far before Sal and Lucio circumvented her escape."
Then there are the sentences that are so awkward that I wonder if Cheryl was consulting a Thesaurus .
(loc. 2122) Declan plunged the hoe he held in his hand deep into terra firma with great force.
As for the story itself I just didn't find the plot believable. The police federal and local were unbelievably inept. The heroine , Sloane too all knowing.
So, I will not be spending any money for books written by Cheryl Bradshaw. The errors and awkward wording prevent me from escaping into the fantasy.
I needed a very quick-read to decompress and started reading this book. After a few chapters, I was gritting my teeth. I made it through this not-a-police-procedural by skimming much of the time. I did read the beginning, middle and ending, and I finished this book, so I could review it without a DNF.
Whilst reading I suspended all disbelief and at intervals, repeated the following as though a mantra “It’s a fantasy! A fantasy!”
It worked. I let slide impossible plot elements, incredibly incompetent police & FBI agents, unrealistic murderer behavior, flat & indistinguishable dialogue, the desperate need of a good editor, etc. Plus the quintessential Mary Sue protagonist, a handsome mobster to the rescue, cliched & muscled bodyguards, police officers who cater to the heroine protagonist, etc.
If you attempt to duplicate my efforts, know that I imbibed a vodka martini.
This is the second Sloane Monroe book I've read and enjoyed them both. However, I keep going back and forth between 2 and 3 stars because somehow a murder mystery with a deeply disturbed serial killer on the lose manages to be light reading.
